KDTime: West Indian Day Parade History

Episode 71 What is Labor Day? To some it’s a huge celebration with big trucks, big bands, loud music, good food, flags waving, people dancing, and lots of vibes. To others it’s a nice day off to grill up the good meat for a barbecue and to acknowledge the fact that the summer is almost over. And it's a day for the ones who literally just take the day to do nada because they work too much. In America labor day is a celebrated holiday on the first Monday of September every year. Some people work depending on what their job is and others galavant in the streets from dusk till dusk.   What’s interesting is that workers fought to create this day because they felt that there needed to be a day to celebrate and take off from all the hard work being done during the year. One day out of 365 to let the American people know that their work was and is appreciated. One day to recognize the contributions many workers made for America’s strength, prosperity and well-being. In the late 1800s...

KDTime: Food Facts You May Not Know

Image
Episode 67 Fact number one. Do you like fruit? Well Frozen Fruit might be a little better for you. We are possibly programmed to believe that fresh is the only way to go when it comes to fruits and veggies but the truth is that if they are frozen they can sometimes be even better for you. There’s a thing called flash-frozen meaning right after the fruits and veggies are picked at their peak ripeness, once frozen they are so full of vitamins and minerals in comparison that may have degraded in their fresh version. Fact number two . Did you know that there is a huge possibility that there is sunscreen in your salad. You heard me correctly. Sunscreen in your salad. A key ingredient in many paints and sunscreens is titanium dioxide and it just so happens to also be in some salad dressings. I...

KDTime: That's Expensive

Episode 61 When I was growing up a bag of chips cost 25 cents, a bag of sunflower seeds was 25 cents, a drink was 50 cents and gum was 5 or 10 cents. A sandwich was maybe $3 dollars. I was able to go to the store with $5 and was able to get a large bag of "junk" food because it was so easy. If I ever came into a store with $20 I felt like a Queen among peasants. It was like I was rich and could do anything. These prices were are facing in this day and age are NOT the same. It is absolutely wild to me that $5 is like chump change. You can feel so broke with $20 in your pocket. Walking around with $100 was incredibly rare so I never really did that but still it doesn't feel like much nowadays. Even though it is a lot of money. It just doesn't feel that way anymore. I don't think I could fathom the amount of brain power it would take to restore order in the American economy but I feel like someone should do something. It shouldn't cost and arm and a leg to LIVE. ...
