KDTime: A Trip Down 2015 "music" Lane

Episode 143

10 Years Later: The 2015 Hits That Still Slap!

When I created this episode last year it felt like a blast from the past. I still can't believe it's been 11 years since 2015. For many of us music fans, it feels like just yesterday we were dancing to "Uptown Funk," crying to "See You Again," and trying our best (or worst) version of Drake's "Hotline Bling" dance.

2015 was a fascinating year in music. Pop stars dominated the charts, hip-hop continued evolving, streaming was becoming the primary way people consumed music, and viral dance songs were everywhere. Looking back now, it's clear that 2015 delivered some of the most memorable songs of the decade. If you were clubbing during this era you had some major turn up moments.

This is the time to grab your headphones and join me; let's revisit the hits that made 2015 unforgettable.

Dancefloor Royalty: The Songs That Got Everyone Moving

If there was one thing 2015 knew how to do, it was create party anthems.

Leading the charge was "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. This song wasn't just a hit, oh no, it was a cultural phenomenon. Highly played if you were at a wedding, a birthday party, a school dance, or a family cookout, "Uptown Funk" was guaranteed to make an appearance.

Other dancefloor favorites included:

  • "Shut Up and Dance" – Walk the Moon

  • "Cheerleader" – OMI

  • "Lean On" – Major Lazer & DJ Snake featuring MØ

  • "Hey Mama" – David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj

  • "Time of Our Lives" – Pitbull & Ne-Yo

Altogether these songs helped define the soundtrack of summer road trips, parties, and unforgettable nights with friends.

Feels & Tearjerkers: The Songs That Hit Us Right in the Heart

Not every hit was designed for the dance floor.

Some songs connected with us on a much deeper emotional level.

"See You Again" became an anthem of remembrance and friendship, touching millions around the world after its appearance in Furious 7. Even today, hearing the piano intro instantly brings back memories. I can't not think about the CGI produced face of Paul Walker (may he Rest in Peace) on to his brother's body. It was weird, sentimental, and iconic all in one. Respectfully not killing off one of the main characters and just having him ride off into the sunset was a picture of perfection.

And then there was Adele's triumphant return with "Hello." The song dominated radio, social media, and conversations almost overnight. I can't tell you how many times I watched the music video on Youtube. I loved everything about this song. The feels, the longing, the wishful feeling, the mood, the fomo, all of it. When you belt out "Hello from the Otherside I must've called a thousand times" it's like releasing pain even if it was for a days, weeks, months, years, the pain of a break up can still sting no matter the time.

Other emotional favorites included:

  • "Thinking Out Loud" – Ed Sheeran

  • "Take Me to Church" – Hozier

  • "Photograph" – Ed Sheeran

  • "Stay With Me" – Sam Smith

  • "Like I'm Gonna Lose You" – Meghan Trainor & John Legend

These songs proved that sometimes the biggest hits are the ones that make us feel something. Make us fall in love, or help us get over a heartbreak. There is no in between.

Pop Perfection: Radio Could Not Stop Playing These Songs

2015 belonged to pop music.

Taylor Swift continued her incredible run with multiple hits including "Blank Space," "Style," "Bad Blood," and "Shake It Off."

Meghan Trainor was everywhere with songs like "All About That Bass," "Lips Are Movin," and "Dear Future Husband."

Other pop favorites included:

  • "Cool for the Summer" – Demi Lovato

  • "Stitches" – Shawn Mendes

  • "Good for You" – Selena Gomez

  • "Jealous" and "Chains" – Nick Jonas

Love them or hate them, these songs dominated playlists and radio stations throughout the year.

Hip-Hop & R&B Heat: The Sound of 2015

When it came to hip-hop and R&B, a few artists completely owned the year.

Fetty Wap seemed unstoppable with "Trap Queen," "679," and "My Way." For a period of time, it felt like every radio station was playing a Fetty Wap song.

Meanwhile, Drake continued his reign with tracks like "Hotline Bling" and "Back to Back," while Nicki Minaj delivered fan favorites including "Only" and "Truffle Butter."

Other standouts included:

  • "Post to Be" – Omarion featuring Chris Brown and Jhené Aiko

  • "No Type" – Rae Sremmurd

  • "Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)" – Rich Homie Quan

  • "Blessings" – Big Sean featuring Drake and Kanye West

  • "7/11" – Beyoncé

These tracks helped shape the sound of mainstream music throughout the year.

Moody Vibes: The Soundtrack for Late Nights

One of the defining sounds of 2015 came from artists creating darker, moodier music.

The Weeknd was at the center of this movement.

Songs like "The Hills," "Can't Feel My Face," and "Earned It" showcased a unique blend of pop, R&B, and atmospheric production that would influence countless artists in the years that followed. I felt so innocent thinking "Can't Feel My Face" was about a love interest that was an actual person... it falls right into the category of songs that are not about people but sound like they are about people.

Other moody favorites included:

  • "Love Me Harder" – Ariana Grande & The Weeknd

  • "Habits (Stay High)" – Tove Lo

  • "Ghost" – Ella Henderson

  • "Locked Away" – R. City featuring Adam Levine

  • "Here" – Alessia Cara

These songs offered a different energy from the party anthems and helped define the emotional side of 2015.

What A Year for Music

Looking back, 2015 gave us a little bit of everything.

We had massive dance hits, emotional ballads, viral sensations, pop perfection, hip-hop anthems, and introspective late-night tracks. It's no wonder so many of these songs still hold a special place in our playlists a decade later.

The real question is:

Which 2015 song instantly takes you back?

Was it the funky groove of "Uptown Funk"? The emotional impact of "See You Again"? The confidence of "Trap Queen"? Or maybe the unforgettable opening of Adele's "Hello"?

Whatever your answer, one thing is certain: 2015 delivered a soundtrack we'll never forget.
