KDTime: Hanging Off a Cliff

 Episode 140

TV’s Most Unforgettable Cliffhangers (1990–2025)

Have you ever sat staring at your television after an episode ended, wondering, "That's it?!" If so, congratulations; you've been the victim of a cliffhanger.

For decades, television writers have mastered the art of leaving viewers hanging, dropping shocking revelations, unexpected twists, and unanswered questions right before the credits roll. Whether it was a season finale, a series finale, or a sudden cancellation, some cliffhangers became part of pop culture history.

On this episode of KDTime, it was time to take a trip through some of television's biggest cliffhangers from years 1990 to 2025 and examining why we shouldn't let them go.

What Makes a Great Cliffhanger?

First of all, a great cliffhanger does more than simply end an episode. It creates anticipation. It gives a sense of wanting more every single time. The shock factor is used so frequently.

The best cliffhangers make viewers:

  • Talk about the show for weeks or months.

  • Develop fan theories.

  • Rewatch episodes looking for clues.

  • Return for the next season.

Sometimes they deliver satisfying answers. Other times? Not so much.

Let's revisit some of the most memorable examples.

The 1990s: Before Social Media, We Just Had to Wait

Twin Peaks

The original run of Twin Peaks delivered one of television's most unsettling endings when Agent Dale Cooper became trapped while his evil doppelgänger escaped.

And I looked it up that fans of the show waited more than 25 years for answers.

The X-Files

The show's mythology was built on cliffhangers. X-Files had alien conspiracies, Mulder's abduction, all kinds of crazy cliffhangers and it's viewers constantly found themselves with more questions than answers.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Season 5 ended with Buffy sacrificing herself to save the world.

For fans, it felt like the ultimate ending!! Well until the show returned the following season. I caught on to Buffy late which is fine. I watched after it came out and was syndicated. I don't think I could've handled the cliff hangers in real time.

Boy Meets World

Teens like myself at the time were all equally invested in Cory and Topanga's relationship. Their breakups, reconciliations, and romantic obstacles often left us eagerly awaiting the next episode. One of the bigger cliff hangers was waiting for Cory's answer to Topanga's question at the end of graduation.

The 2000s: The Golden Age of Cliffhangers

Lost

If cliffhangers had a Hall of Fame, Lost would have its own wing.

The phrase "We have to go back!" instantly became one of television's most shocking moments. Every season seemed determined to leave viewers speechless. I'll be honest I never got into Lost and honestly the twists and turns. The confusing plots would've sent me spiraling and that's probably why it's still talked about today!

Alias

Sydney Bristow waking up to discover two years had passed remains one of the most jaw-dropping twists in television history.

24

Jack Bauer rarely got a peaceful ending. Every season found new ways to raise the stakes and leave audiences anxious for more. Really interesting how the writers used each episode to talk about "1 hour" of the day. It's just funny how much can happen in a 24 hour time period. That was well done.

Prison Break

Every escape attempt led to another problem, another betrayal, and another cliffhanger. At some point it felt more like the title of the series should've been something different because seriously how many times can you break/escape from prison??

Heroes

The show's first season had most fans completely invested in the mystery surrounding the future and the fate of its characters. It had so much potential as a show but at the same time fans were ready for more.

The 2010s: Cliffhangers Dominate the Internet

The Walking Dead

Perhaps no modern cliffhanger generated more debate than Negan's infamous bat swing.

Fans spent months speculating about who would meet Lucille. I was a scaredy cat when it came to watching this show and I saw at least 2 seasons before calling it quits. But I remember every one around who watched and loved the show couldn't stop talking about what happened. And then when they brought the show back and people found out who got the swing. The fans were even more chatty!

Debates and guesses folded twitter and other social media websites.

Game of Thrones

When Jon Snow was stabbed and left bleeding in the snow, viewers spent nearly a year arguing over whether he was truly dead. There were so many cliff hangers when it came to Game of Thrones but this one had us all begging for any kind of spoiler to know if Jon Snow was alive or not. Fans who have read the books would've had more insight but the writers weren't following the books as closely as book readers would've liked.

Stranger Things

Every season seemed to end with a new mystery, but Hopper's apparent death left us fans especially emotional. I was livid wondering if Hopper died. The only sacrificial people Hopper and Eleven "Elle" both couldn't help but put people first. The rest of the group just wanted to save everyone's life. Which makes sense but at the same time. There is a selfishness when no one wants to be the sacrificial lamb and make the hard decisions where at least one wouldn't make it.

The Good Place

The revelation that the characters were actually in the Bad Place completely flipped the show on its head. It's funny because some fans say they saw it coming but for me. I was completely shocked. It was beautifully written and it changed the whole show making it an instant classic. It's a great show!

This Is Us

For multiple seasons, viewers wondered exactly how Jack Pearson died. The slow reveal became one of television's most effective long-term cliffhangers. It was the type of cliff hanger that was so beautiful that when it actual is revealed you still don't want to believe that's how things went down. THE AMOUNT OF TEARS I SHED WATCHING THIS SHOW COULD FILL A MAN MADE LAKE... probably.

The 2020s: Streaming Changes the Game

In today's world, cliffhangers trend within minutes.

Instead of waiting around the water cooler at work or school, everyone immediately jumps online to dissect every frame even more so.

Loki

Marvel blew open the multiverse and left viewers wondering what chaos would come next. I still can't believe the way the 1 season ended. BUT it literally opened the door to so many options, opportunities, storylines to come to life.

Orange is the New Black

In the very first season we see a side of Piper that up until that point we couldn't fathom because she played the "innocent" victim all the way through. Watching the show, it made me curious about what prison is really like but not curious enough to want to do anything to end up there. HELL NO! *excuse my french* I would NEVER want to end up in prison. But the part that gets me is that when you make certain decisions in life you have to face the consequences and with Piper she never wanted to admit that what she did was wrong.

The Bear

The emotional fallout from Carmen's choices created one of the most talked-about endings in recent television. The Bear is such a well done show and the first season finale left all of us in shock but hopeful going into the next season.

The Most Frustrating Cliffhangers: Unfinished Business

Not every cliffhanger was planned.

Some happened because shows were canceled before they could finish telling their stories. And as frustrating as that is, it's even more so that we will never truly know the direction the show would've ended up.

Emily Owens, MD.

The series ended with major questions unanswered between the main characters. Who was the end game? Emily and Will? Or Emily and someone else?

LoveCraft Country

A fascinating premise and huge mysteries were left unresolved. Seriously I wanted to know what more they could've talked about, where would the show be right now??

The Secret Circle

Fans never got the explanations they were promised. The biggest question we still need answered: What is going on with the four mysterious new Balcoin kids?!

Pitch

The emotional final moments teased exciting possibilities that we as viewers never got to see. Would Ginny's career continue? I mean I know there would've been more chitchat about how's she a woman playing in a man's league but still her pitch was fire. I think the show was too early for it's time. I think it would work way better now. Give another chance and have a reboot!

When Cliffhangers Become Art

Some shows intentionally leave their endings open to interpretation. Which as great as that is... it actually sucks. I don't want to have to come up with my own interpretation. I'd rather have things wrap up nicely in a neat little bow.

Nurse Jackie

The final episode left viewers wondering whether Jackie survives her overdose. The ambiguity is the point. HOWEVER! Jackie went through a lot and I fully understand that once an addict there will always be a part of them that will suffer from it and that's totally not their fault. But why would they make me have to wonder. Apart of me still thinks that she didn't survive and that would've made a better ending because then honestly she'd be free. Free of the disease. Free from the judgment. Free of the responsibility. I know that doesn't sound great but if she did survive whose to say it wouldn't happen again.

The Sopranos

Television's most famous cut-to-black remains one of entertainment's most debated endings. Again another show that has me believing there was no survivors and that would've been a-ok with me.

Angel

The series ends just before a massive battle, leaving majority of fans to imagine what happened next. Angel swings his sword and the scene fades to black. I'd like to assume they won the battle especially with a cluster of characters that bit the dust. HOWEVER! I feel like one more episode to show the results and if the characters move on would've sufficed truly.

Reasons To Love Being Left Hanging...

As frustrating as cliffhangers can be, they work because they tap into our curiosity.

We want closure.

We want answers.

We want to know what happens next.

And when a show refuses to give us those answers, it stays with us far longer than a neatly wrapped ending ever could.

Some cliffhangers become cultural moments. Others become cautionary tales. But the best ones keep us talking years even decades later.

Final Thoughts

Television has mastered the art of leaving us hanging and it will never go away. We will always be left wanting for more. It gives us more to talk about though right?

Whether the mystery was eventually solved or remains forever unanswered, these moments remind us why we love great storytelling.

I'd love to hear from you:

What TV cliffhanger still lives rent-free in your head?

  • Was it a shocking death?
  • An unexpected betrayal?
  • A mystery that never got solved?
  • Or a series finale that left you screaming at the screen?
