Then vs. Now: The Glow-Up of Everyday Life
From dial-up tones to TikTok scrolls — how far have we really come?
There’s something about looking back that makes you want to feel like a kid again. Maybe it’s the nostalgia, maybe it’s the simplicity, or maybe it’s realizing just how much everyday life has completely transformed right before our eyes.
In this episode of KDTIME, I decided it was time to jump into one of the ultimate comparisons: Then vs. Now — breaking down how the things we once thought were peak living have evolved into today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world.
And listen… some of these glow-ups? I'll give it to you straight. Questionable. 😂
📞 Communication: From “Call Me After 9” to “Just Text Me”
Back then, communication required effort.
You had:
One house phone (with a long cord you stretched into another room)
Limited minutes on your cell
And the ultimate fear — calling your crush's house and their parent answering
We mastered:
Writing notes in class
Three-way calling
AIM away messages that lowkey told our whole mood
Now?
Everything is instant:
Texts, DMs, FaceTime
Voice notes instead of actual conversations
And somehow… we talk more but say less
There was something about anticipation back then. Waiting for a call. Hearing your ringtone. That excitement? You can’t really duplicate that with a notification. And if you were like me recording a voicemail that either had the song playing in the back or the "prank" voicemail where you pretended to answer the phone and you hit the caller with a "Ah gotcha leave a message at the beep". Good times! Now my phone says my voicemail message or you might have a more professional sounded one. "Hi you've reached ... I'm away from the phone right now please leave a message with your name & number and I'll give you a call back when I am able" or something like that. Boring but necessary.
🎶 Music: From Mixtapes to Algorithms
Music used to be an experience.
You didn’t just find songs — you worked for them:
Recording songs off the radio (and getting mad when the DJ talked over the intro)
Burning CDs for your friends or your crush
Watching countdown shows just to see your favorite video
Now?
You have millions of songs in your pocket
Playlists are curated for you
And one TikTok clip can make a song go viral overnight
Convenient? Absolutely.
But personal? That’s debatable.
Because nothing hits like a handmade mixtape that someone took time to put together just for you. Making something felt special, like you took the time to do something for someone else in the hopes that they'd reciprocate your feelings. I've gotten mixes and I've burned my own cds. Had to deal with cd players and all that. But now I feel like my playlists that are made for me on Spotify don't even explore music outside my "likes". I love to listen to new music but I have to search for it or hear it somewhere else and then incorporate it into my music.
🍱 Food & Snacks: From Lunchroom Trades to Lifestyle Choices
Let’s be real — snacks used to be elite.
We’re talking:
Lunchables as a status symbol
Fruit snacks, Gushers, Capri Suns
Kool-Aid mixed with zero measurements, just vibes
And the cafeteria? That was a marketplace. You could trade your whole lunch and walk away with the real prize. If you didn't bring lunch, you dealt with whatever the cafeteria lunch ladies prepared and if you didn't like it. PB&J was the only alternative.
Now, everything is:
Organic
Air-fried
Gluten-free, dairy-free, guilt-free
And while that’s great for health… it doesn’t always hit the same.
Because back then, nobody was reading labels. If it tasted good, it was getting eaten. Period.
📼 Entertainment: From Waiting Weekly to Binge-Watching Overnight
There was a time when you had to WAIT!
Wait for your favorite show to come on at the end of the day (PrimeTime)
Wait for the next episode to come the following week or weeks because of "Mid-finales"
Wait for the movie to drop on DVD and this could take months to years!
And if you missed it? That was it. You just missed it. Too bad too sad wish Batman was your dad type deal.
Now?
Entire seasons drop at once. You bet 13 episodes now and a couple years in between for the next season
Streaming gives you unlimited access you can watch what you want when you want
And “one episode” turns into five real quick, absolutely next thing you know it's 3am and you contemplate seeing another one because you have to finish the season
We gained convenience, but we lost the shared experience.
No more calling your friend the next day like, “Did you see what happened last night?!”
Now everyone’s watching at different speeds, trying to avoid spoilers like it’s a full-time job. You can turn off your notifications, unfollow whoever you need to completely log off to avoid any surprises. And then your friend my text a meme, video extra with BIG news and it ruins your day/mood.
👕 Fashion: From “What Were We Wearing?” to “Oh That’s Back in Style?”
Fashion is probably the wildest full-circle moment.
Back then:
Baggy jeans
Matching sets
Name belts, bandanas, oversized fits
And now?
It’s all coming back — rebranded as “vintage” or “Y2K aesthetic.”
The same looks some people would get roasted for (probably because they didn't wear it correctly) are now trending on social media. Gen Z are "making it popular" but really they are just a bunch of copycats.
And honestly? We deserve credit.
We did it first. 💁🏽♀️
🛼 Social Life: From “Be Home Before the Streetlights” to “I’ll Just Stay In”
Being social used to mean being outside.
The mall was the meeting spot, going to the park, even the library where we'd play "man hunt"
Skating rinks, block parties, hanging out on the block
Making plans and actually sticking to them
Now?
Group chats replace meetups, sending memes back and forth
Social media replaces face-to-face interaction, we don't even laugh anymore "we think it's funny"
And sometimes, staying home just feels easier and it is when there's nothing cool happening
We’re more connected than ever… but also a little more distant. The amount of friends I haven't talked to in person but we have long going reel, meme whatever shared between us.
💭 So… Was Then Better or Just Different?
That’s the real question.
Because truthfully, it’s not about which era is better; it’s about what each one gave us.
Then gave us:
Patience
Effort
Shared experiences
Now gives us:
Convenience
Access
Endless options
But if we’re being honest!! There are definitely some things from back then we wish we could bring back. Such as late nights on the stoop with your neighbors. Not having a care about life "issues". No stressful jobs, no bills and things. I'd love to get to a time where seeing my friend didn't mean I had to schedule it in the calendar and it just happened.
What are your thoughts??
What’s one thing YOU miss from back in the day?
Is it the music? The snacks? The way we connected?
