But let’s be honest… not everything in these genres hits the same.

Some projects get way too much hype, others are criminally overlooked, and then there are the rare few that land perfectly in that sweet spot of “yeah, this deserved every bit of love it got.”

So today, we’re breaking it all down starting with the overrated types

🚨 The Overrated Zone: All Hype, Not Enough Substance?

Let’s start with the spicy takes. These are the movies and shows that had everyone talking… but didn’t quite deliver for everyone.

This one had major expectations, especially coming out of the The Mandalorian hype. But somehow, Boba Fett didn’t even feel like the main attraction in his own story.

🎬 Prometheus

A prequel to the Alien universe that looked incredible—but left audiences scratching their heads. The ideas were big, but the execution? Not always logical.

📺 Invasion

For a show about aliens invading Earth… there wasn’t nearly enough excitement. Slow pacing and scattered storylines made it tough for some viewers to stay locked in.

🎬 Eternals

Ambitious and diverse, but also overloaded. Too many characters, not enough depth. It aimed high—but didn’t fully connect emotionally.

A dinner party + a cosmic event = pure chaos. This low-budget film proves you don’t need flashy effects to tell a mind-blowing story.

📺 The OA

Strange, emotional, and deeply layered. It blended sci-fi, fantasy, and spirituality in a way that felt ahead of its time. And yes—still not over that cancellation.

🎬 Stardust

Magic, romance, adventure, and sky pirates? This had all the ingredients of a classic but somehow slipped through the cracks.

📺 Sense8

Created by The Wachowskis, this show explored human connection on a global scale. Emotional, bold, and way more meaningful than people expected.

🎬 The Man from Earth

One room. One conversation. One man claiming to be 14,000 years old. It’s simple—but incredibly powerful storytelling.

And finally the just! This definitely felt like writing a Goldilocks and the 3 bears type blog post.

✅ Just Right: The Ones That Earned Their Hype

Now let’s give credit where it’s due. These are the movies and shows that were popular—and actually deserved it.

🎬 The Matrix

A cultural reset. From action scenes to philosophical questions, this movie changed the game.

📺 Stranger Things

A perfect mix of nostalgia, horror, humor, and heart. It brought multiple generations together—and made Eggo waffles iconic again.

🎬 The Empire Strikes Back

Often considered the best in the Star Wars saga. Darker, deeper, and full of unforgettable moments.

📺 The Expanse

Smart, grounded sci-fi with political depth and realistic space physics. A slow burn that truly paid off.

🎬 Arrival

A quieter sci-fi story that hits emotionally. It proves that communication—not conflict—is one of the most powerful ideas in the universe.

Sci-fi and fantasy are some of the most creative genres out there—but not every project lands the same for everyone.
