KDTime: From LOL to WTH: Comedy Hits & Misses

Episode 125

🎬 From LOL to WTH: Comedy Hits & Misses

Comedy movies are supposed to do one thing: make us laugh. But if you’ve ever sat through a film wondering “how did this get made?”… then you already know—not all comedies are created equal.

Laugh Out Loud on KDTIME, because I'm diving into the best, the worst, and the downright confusing world of comedy films. From iconic classics to unforgettable flops, I'll ask the ultimate question: what separates comedy gold from total fool’s gold?

😂 The Comedy Gold Standard

Let’s start with the heavy hitters—the movies that never miss.

Films like Airplane! completely changed the parody game with rapid-fire jokes that still land decades later. Coming to America brought unforgettable characters and quotable moments that have lived on through generations. And then there’s Superbad, a modern classic that somehow balances crude humor with real coming-of-age emotion.

These movies work because they:

  • Nail timing and delivery

  • Have memorable, quotable lines

  • Create characters you actually care about

  • Stay rewatchable no matter how many times you’ve seen them

Debate Question: Are these movies timeless, or are we just attached to the era they came from?

💣 When Comedy Goes Wrong (Fools’ Gold)

Now let’s talk about the misses.

Some movies come in with big names and high expectations but completely fall flat. The Love Guru is often criticized for trying too hard without landing the jokes. Gigli became infamous for all the wrong reasons, and Movie 43? Let’s just say it’s a collection of “what were they thinking?” moments.

Even legends aren’t safe—Norbit is often seen as a rare miss in an otherwise incredible career. Don't get me wrong. I love Norbit but I can understand where the comedy falls flat and it becomes more of pointed comedy film instead of an all around standard.

So what went wrong?

  • Forced or outdated humor

  • Weak or confusing storylines

  • Over-reliance on shock value

  • Jokes that just… don’t land

Debate Question: Do these movies deserve all the hate, or were they just misunderstood?

😬 So Bad… They’re Actually Good?

Here’s where things get interesting.

Some comedies are technically bad—but somehow still entertaining. Movies like White Chicks and Dude, Where’s My Car? might not win awards, but they’ve built cult followings and are endlessly quotable.

These are the movies you throw on with friends, laugh at and with, and somehow keep coming back to. Both movies are quoted by me on a regular basis.

Debate Question: Are these movies secretly genius… or are we just nostalgic?

🤔 The Middle Ground: Love It or Hate It

Then there are the comedies that split audiences right down the middle.

Some people think Step Brothers is one of the funniest movies ever made. Others? Not so much. Same goes for Napoleon Dynamite—it’s either hilarious or completely confusing depending on who you ask. Step Brothers has the type of humor you'd expect from Will Ferrell. Napoleon Dynamite, it's like you have to be there to get it. It doesn't try hard at all.

And honestly, that’s what makes comedy so unique—humor is personal.

🎙 Final Take: What Makes Us Laugh?

At the end of the day, comedy is one of the most subjective genres out there. What has one person crying with laughter might leave someone else completely unimpressed.

But that’s what makes this conversation so fun.

So now I'm passing the question to YOU:

  • What’s your all-time favorite comedy?

  • What’s the worst one you’ve ever seen?

  • And which “bad” movie do you secretly love?
