๐ฌ End of an Era: “The Last Episode” — Series Finales
There’s something about a TV series finale that just hits different. It’s not just the end of a show—it’s the end of routines, characters that felt like family, and storylines we invested years into.
And if you grew up in the 2000s–2010s? Oh, you definitely remember where you were for some of these endings.
Some finales had us crying happy tears, clapping at the screen, and immediately starting a rewatch. Others? Let’s just say… I'm still side-eyeing the writers ๐ Let's start with the finales that ROCKED!
✅ Finales That Rocked (They Understood the Assignment)
๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ Malcolm in the Middle
Lois revealing her long-term plan for Malcolm’s success was peak parenting—and peak storytelling. Funny, smart, and heartfelt all at once. And now the show is back for a limited reboot. How are they going to top that ending and how long will this reboot last?
๐ง๐ฝ♀️ The Vampire Diaries
Say what you want about the drama, but this finale delivered emotion. Sacrifice, love, and that reunion scene? I was in tears. After 8 long seasons the finale gave us what we needed.
๐ Community
Meta until the very end. It didn’t try to be traditional—it stayed true to its quirky identity and gave us a reflective, self-aware goodbye. I'm still waiting on the movie. The only thing I didn't like was there was no return of the original characters like Troy and Shirley but that's alright. Oh and also that Jeff and Annie NEVER got together. A kiss of what could've been is fine I guess. The ending was great and set them up for the movie.
๐งก The Middle
Simple, relatable, and real. No over-the-top drama—just a family moving into their next chapter. Sometimes that’s all you need. I loved that everyone of the kids got a happy ending and the parents were there to witness it all. It was like they were all able to see where they came from and how much they grew over the years.
๐ต๐ฝ♂️ The Mentalist
After all the twists and turns, seeing Jane and Lisbon finally get their happy ending felt earned. Peaceful and satisfying. Patrick Jane was a very smart man but it took him WAYYYYYY to long to realize that Teresa Lisbon was right for him. Again I understand that he was trying to catch a killer and he wanted to avenge his late wife and child but it was dragged on for a long time. Other than that the ending to me was perfect.
Onward to the ones that were questionable
๐คท๐ฝ♀️ Finales That Were… Complicated (We’re Still Debating)
๐ค Glee
Flash-forwards, big dreams, and emotional callbacks—it had the ingredients, but not everyone loved how neatly everything wrapped up. Glee was good and had a good run. I am only on the fence about the ending because of small things like certain people weren't there and it felt too finished. Honestly I think the show should've ended with them graduating in high school because no one really cares about the new kids no offense. They were okay and whatever but the O.Gs are who we want to see and it's very clear that because they are out of high school and are living their lives away from that we can't see em all.
๐ Ugly Betty
Betty stepping into her next chapter in London was a nice touch, but the finale didn’t quite match the magic of earlier seasons. Betty is the type of person who through all odds and adversity can overcome and stand in the well deserved spotlight. However I am torn because the finale made it seem like she and Daniel would start something in London but I kind of don't want them together. I know I know but he still had a lot to go through and I don't want her to be the "prize" in this way.
๐ฅ House
House faking his death and riding off with Wilson? Poetic. Strange. Very House. I like many of you am still split on whether it was genius or just… odd. Why go through such lengths? I do understand that Wilson needed to live out his life with cancer but House why did you do that? He could've just as easily quit or retired.
๐ป Shameless
Frank’s ending was symbolic, but the lack of a full family moment—and Fiona’s absence—left a noticeable gap. Fiona should've returned at least for the finale. And the fact that none of the kids even knew their father - the Patriarch- of the family passed is so sad. He was a selfish and terrible person but he still had a family.
๐๐พ♀️ Girlfriends
This one hurts. The show didn’t get the finale it deserved, leaving storylines unresolved. We were left hanging—and not in a good way. I just want to know does Joan ever get the life she's been dreaming of. Does Toni Childs ever come back and reconcile with the girls? The show was about the girlfriends I know but still. I do appreciate that the girlfriends actresses came onto Tracee Ellis Ross's show Black~ish. AND I understand that at the time the show didn't survive all the hoopla behind the scenes with the companies and writer's protests and things. So it was a tough loss but I'm glad we got 8 seasons at least.
And finally the pancakes that you were probably toss in the trash
❌ Finales That Flopped so badly I would never want to watch again
๐ 90210 (CW reboot)
Everything felt rushed—from proposals to major life moments. It was like the show hit fast-forward and hoped we wouldn’t notice. I mostly feel like this show just needed to be over and the writers gave up because of the failed directions they went.
๐ What I Like About You
The romantic wrap-up was cute… but way too quick. After four seasons, we deserved more depth. Don't get me wrong I loved the "end games" we got but one in particular came too late and I'm saddening we didn't get to explore that relationship more. See them develop and actually be a couple.
๐ The Secret Life of the American Teenager
After all that buildup, we got… a breakup and an open-ended future? It felt incomplete and underwhelming. I hated that poor Amy practically got everything she wanted but it wasn't enough. Ricky was never in-love with her. He was only trying to be a good guy but deep down you can't build a life off of that. And no matter how much you might tell yourself things will change. Some things never do and people don't. The only bright spot about this show was that it put Shaliene Woodley on the map! She's done so well for herself being in The Divergent Series and most recently (for me) the tv show Paradise.
๐ South of Nowhere
I loved Spencer and Ashley, but the rushed final season made the reunion feel less impactful than it should’ve been. I just like maybe some of you deserved a better ending. I know they did a flash forward type deal but it wasn't enough. I think every character deserved more. Unfortunately I think this show was before it's time. It would've done really well in the 2010s in my opinion. And I don't think the actors and actresses have been anything really notable since.
๐ Nurse Jackie
That ambiguous ending? Whew. It was powerful, but for many of us, it felt more frustrating than fulfilling. I hate a mysterious ending. I don't care if it's left up to interpretation. That feels like to me that the writers didn't know what to do and honestly it didn't matter which direction they'd go because someone was going to hate it BUT they could've at least done something instead of leaving us to wonder.
๐ค So… What Makes a Finale Actually Work?
A great finale doesn’t have to be perfect—but it does need to feel earned.
It’s about:
✔️ Staying true to the characters
✔️ Giving some level of closure
✔️ Respecting the journey fans took with the show
Because when a finale gets it right? It lives with you forever.
And when it doesn’t? Oh, we’re talking about it for years.
