TV Chemistry Without Closure – The Couples That Never Were

Have you ever watched a TV show and thought, “Why aren’t they together yet?” or even worse—“Wait… they’re NEVER going to be together?” Yeah, me too. That feeling of watching two characters with electric chemistry flirt, fight, or share deep, vulnerable moments, only to see the show keep them apart (or pair them with someone else entirely) is one of the most bittersweet parts of being a fan.

In my latest KDTime episode, “The What-Ifs of TV Couples,” I dove headfirst into the world of TV duos who had the spark, the tension, the moments—but not the relationship. This blog post is the perfect companion to that episode, expanding on some of the fan-favorite couples who gave us everything but the romance.

🔍 The Cases of Almost Love

Let’s start with one of the most mind-bending duos: Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler from Sherlock. Their relationship was all mind games and meaningful stares. Sherlock admired Irene’s intellect, Irene adored Sherlock’s brain and aloofness—it was classic enemies-to-something-more energy. Yet, despite all the buildup, their potential romance was left to linger in unspoken tension and cryptic texts. Brutal.

Then there’s Rachel and Joey from Friends. We know Ross and Rachel were the central "will-they-won’t-they" of the series, but Joey and Rachel had something softer, more surprising. Joey brought out a fun and free-spirited side of Rachel, and there was genuine affection there. Their romance was brief and never fully explored—leaving many fans (myself included) wishing we’d gotten more.

And what about animated shows? Zuko and Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender sparked major fandom debate. Their dynamic shifted from enemies to reluctant allies to mutual respect, with moments of real emotional intensity. Even though Katara ultimately ended up with Aang, the chemistry she shared with Zuko gave Zutara fans fuel for years.

💔 Delayed Love and Missed Timing

In some cases, the show did pair the characters up—eventually—but not before dragging us through seasons of pining, miscommunication, and side relationships. Think Mulder and Scully from The X-Files or Stiles and Lydia from Teen Wolf. They had chemistry from day one, but their actual romantic developments took forever to happen. And sometimes, by the time it did, it didn’t feel quite as satisfying anymore.

Similarly, Buffy and Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer danced the line between intense attraction and emotional dysfunction. While they had their moments, Buffy never truly reciprocated Spike’s love in a lasting way. It was passionate, sure—but doomed.

🤝 Friendships with Fire

Let’s not forget the pairings that remained platonic—officially, anyway—but left us wondering what if?

  • Meredith and Alex from Grey’s Anatomy: Their deep trust and history made many fans wonder why the writers never explored something more.

  • Clarke and Bellamy from The 100: Their partnership was the backbone of the series, filled with leadership struggles, emotional moments, and undeniable tension—but it never blossomed romantically (despite fan hopes). And the respect they had for one another ended in such a heartbreaking twist of events that I can never recover from.

  • Steve and Nancy from Stranger Things: Steve’s glow-up and emotional maturity made fans root for a Nancy/Steve reunion, but the plot had other plans. Steve went from jerk to hero in my book and I think Nancy could rekindle what was lost with Steve. (Although I personally didn't mind her relationship with Jonathan, it's just kind of awkward to work with a irl ex)

🎧 Why We Love the “What-Ifs”

Unfulfilled romance keeps us watching, hoping, and theorizing. It builds anticipation and gives us space to imagine what could’ve been. Sometimes the tension is more exciting than the actual payoff. But when shows don’t give us closure, that “what if?” lingers—often becoming one of the most talked-about elements long after the finale.

In my podcast episode, I break down more couples and share my personal favorites that almost were. If you’ve ever yelled at your screen, shipped characters that never sailed, or wrote your own fanfic ending—this one’s for you.
