Episode 66
Now in this episode we’re going to have some fun and sort of trot down memory lane a bit of some of the top greatest girl bands/girl groups? A girl group is a musical act of girls/women who sing normally in sync and harmony. When did this start?
One of the first girl groups were formed in 1922 and they were
“The Three X Sisters, an American all-girl harmony singing trio initially known as The Hamilton Sisters and Fordyce. They were on stage singing together in New York City, on Broadway, as early as 1922 and formed their trio in 1924, which was composed of Pearl Santos (née Hamilton) and Violet Hamilton from Cumberland, Maryland, and Jessie Fordyce from Brooklyn, New York. They were known on NBC radio as "radio's foremost harmony trio."”
You know those roaring twenties that’s talked about these ladies were a part of it. Another couple of groups were the Boswell sisters and the Andrews sisters. A lot of girl groups were mostly sisters. The Andrews Sisters consisting of
“contralto LaVerne Sophia Andrews (July 6, 1911 – May 8, 1967), soprano Maxene Anglyn Andrews (January 3, 1916 – October 21, 1995), and mezzo-soprano Patricia "Patty" Marie Andrews (February 16, 1918 – January 30, 2013). The sisters have sold an estimated 80 million records.”
They are from that boogie woogie era. Their song boogie-woogie bugle boy was a hit in 1941 and can be seen as an example of jump blues which is an up-tempo style of blues and jazz. There are many references that pay homage. Most recently Pitch Perfect 2 in 2015. I also think the characters on the Disney Cruise Marvel themed did a quick rendition for Captain America.
Interestingly enough the Andrews Sisters started as a tribute to the Boswell sisters and kept going from there. Martha, Connie and Helvetia Boswell had a short career formally broken up in 1936. Connee was the most successful of the trio on her solo career.
Moving forward, a lot of all girl groups started forming from 1955 and are still going. So many of them have impacted the music world with great force and are still very popular to this day.
Most of the time it’s behind the scenes drama because girls are dramatic. Speaking as a girl I completely understand. Every girl wants to be the it girl in a group, they are the diva, the main character etc etc. But it’s not just on them. They are surrounded by inner circle and outside fans that constantly compare the girls to each other. Who is the better singer, Who is the prettiest, who can dance better and all that. One of the things about those sister groups I mentioned earlier was that for a lot of their songs it was mostly harmonizing and singing the same lyrics at the same time. As time progressed, one girl was usually picked to sing more of the lyrics alone while the rest sang back up and harmonized on certain lines. Or they were told what parts to sing.
